Flower Arranging Class Hanoi English: Hands-On Workshop Guide

By the Vietnam Flower Workshop team · 2026-11-06

We teach flower arranging in English to travelers and expats at our Hanoi workshop, with sessions running 90 minutes to 2 hours depending on design complexity and group size. Each participant works with imported and locally-sourced fresh flowers, learning conditioning, color balance, wrapping, and spiral hand-tie technique—the most practical method for beginners. You take your finished piece home the same day. Sessions are tailored: one-on-one couples, small groups, families with kids (ages 5+), and corporate teams. We reply as soon as we can on WhatsApp to confirm your preferred date and preferred arrangement type, then quote you directly. No set prices are advertised; ask us for a quote on WhatsApp. The biggest beginner struggle is holding stem tension during the spiral—we show you the wrist angle and practice it step-by-step until it feels natural. Heat survival depends on proper conditioning (removing lower leaves, fresh cuts, cold water) and misting after class; we explain care before you leave. ️ See how a class runs

What exactly happens in a Hanoi flower class?

A typical session starts with a 10-minute orientation: we show you our workspace, introduce the day's flowers, and explain the conditioning process—why we strip leaves, cut stems at 45°, and soak in clean water before we start. Next, 15–20 minutes of hands-on conditioning: you do it yourself on your own stems while we guide you. Then we demonstrate the spiral hand-tie on a practice bunch; you watch our wrist angle, the way fingers feed stems in, and how the spiral gets tighter. The remaining 50–70 minutes is your turn: you build your own arrangement, row by row, while we walk around, adjust grip, suggest color placement, and cheer. Last 10 minutes: we show wrapping techniques—kraft paper, cellophane, twine—and you finish it. You leave with a professional-looking arrangement and photos to remember it.

Who should book a flower class in English?

WhoBest fit?Why
Solo traveler, 1–2 weeks in HanoiTourist workshops or drop-in arranging classNo commitment, English-fluent guides, leave with a gift
Couple on holidayPrivate & couple sessionsYour own florist, 90 min, romantic vibe, no strangers
Family with kids 5–12Kids & family workshopLower tables, shorter stems, simpler spirals, messy is fine
Corporate team (5–15 people)Team building workshopCompetitive or collaborative designs, bonding, photos
Expat wanting deeper skillFloral design courseMulti-week modules, color theory, seasonal trends, mentorship

Each format runs the same conditioning-spiral-wrap sequence, but scaled to time, space, and skill level.

Why do flowers wilt so fast in Hanoi heat?

Hanoi's tropical humidity and 25–35°C temperatures (March–September especially) speed up transpiration—flowers lose water through petals faster than roots can replenish it. Even imported roses and chrysanthemums weaken within 2–3 days without care. We condition every stem in cold, clean water and remove lower foliage (the biggest culprit for bacterial growth) before class. After you leave, mist your arrangement daily, keep it out of direct sun, and place it in the coolest room—air-con corner is ideal. Roses and carnations tolerate heat better than dahlias or ranunculus; we tell you which flowers you're using and give you a one-page care card. A simple daily mist and fresh water every 2–3 days extends life to 5–7 days even in peak heat.

How do we adapt classes for kids and big groups?

Kids (ages 5–10) work with shorter stems, lighter holders, and simpler spirals—we teach a loose, forgiving grip so frustration stays low. They pick their own color combinations (we guide, not dictate) and usually finish in 60 minutes. Older kids (11–16) tackle standard hand-ties; they love learning professional techniques. For groups of 8+, we set up stations so everyone has elbow room, mirror the demo multiple times so those at the back see clearly, and assign one of us to float between tables troubleshooting. We build in a "show and tell" moment where each person rotates to see others' work—it kills comparison anxiety and sparks ideas. Rainy days (June–August) are our busiest because the workshop is cool and dry; we sometimes run back-to-back sessions, so we confirm dates on WhatsApp early.

What mistakes do beginners make with hand-ties?

The top three: (1) Loose spiral grip—stems slip, the whole thing collapses. Fix: hold the gathering point with thumb and forefinger like a pencil; feed new stems at a 45° angle into the spiral, rotate the bunch clockwise, and tighten after every 3–4 stems. (2) Too many stems in one spot—creates a dense lump instead of a balanced dome. Fix: count as you go (we teach 25–35 stems for a standard size); vary stem heights by 2–3cm as you spiral outward. (3) Forgetting to remove lower foliage—leaves sit in vase water, rot, and shorten vase life to 1–2 days. Fix: strip all leaves 5cm below the gathering point before you start spiraling. We run through these on every class; even after 10 years of arranging, pros still slip up. The spiral hand-tie is learnable in one session, but the confidence to hold tension and the habit of checking foliage take practice at home.

How to choose between workshop types before you book

Ask yourself four questions: (1) How much time do I have? Solo travelers or expats wanting depth book floral design courses (4–8 weeks, 2 hours per week). Holiday-makers fit a single 90-minute session. (2) Am I solo, paired, or in a group? Couples book private & couple sessions; teams choose team building workshops; families pick kids & family options. (3) What will I do with my arrangement? If it's a gift, ask us about flower box and basket classes—they're easier to transport and look polished for giving. If it's for your home, standard bouquets are fine. (4) What season is it? Seasonal workshops teach Tet wreaths (January–February), Christmas pieces (November–December), and lotus arrangements (April–September). Before you confirm, check availability on WhatsApp—we reply as soon as we can—and ask for a quote. There are no hidden fees; we quote all-in per person. Also confirm if you have any flower allergies or sensitivities (some people react to chrysanthemum pollen).

What to check before you book

  1. Confirm your preferred date and time on WhatsApp—we check availability and let you know same-day if possible.
  2. Mention any flower allergies (pollen sensitivity, latex). We'll adapt.
  3. Ask for a quote—tell us session type (individual, couple, group size, or course). We reply with pricing based on flower cost and session length.
  4. For groups of 8+, book at least 1 week ahead so we prep table space and order enough flowers.
  5. Wear clothes you don't mind getting wet—water splashes, soil happens, it's normal.
  6. Bring a phone or camera if you want photos of your work; we encourage it.
  7. Ask about transportation if you're worried about carrying your arrangement. We describe the best way to hold it; taxis and Grab drivers are used to it.

We teach entirely in English. Guides are fluent and patient with beginners. If you prefer Vietnamese or a mix, tell us on WhatsApp and we'll arrange it.

Can I book a class for tomorrow, or do I need to plan ahead?

It depends on availability. We reply as soon as we can on WhatsApp. For single participants, sometimes same-day works. For groups or specific dates, earlier is better.

What if I've never done flower arranging before?

Perfect—that's our core audience. We start from conditioning and basics. You'll leave with a finished, professional-looking arrangement and the confidence to try it at home.

How long do flowers last after the class?

5–7 days in Hanoi heat if you mist daily and keep water fresh. We give you a care card. Roses last longest; dahlias wilt faster.

Can I take my arrangement on a plane or in a taxi?

Yes, if it's wrapped well. We wrap it securely. Lay it flat or hold it upright with one hand on the vase. Taxis and Grab drivers are used to it.

What if the class is rained out?

We're indoors, so rain doesn't stop us. We just confirm you're still coming on WhatsApp and prep the space. Rainy season is actually popular because it's cooler.
